Limited Review

A quarter's review, on the standard that governs it.

Inquiry and analytical procedures, not an audit — with the quarter's figures read from the vouchers and a prepared, reviewed, concluded chain that refuses self-review.

A quarterly review is not a small audit. It is a different engagement with a different standard behind it, and the most common way firms get it wrong is by doing too much of the wrong thing and too little of the right thing.

Built on what SRE 2410 actually asks for

The module is built on SRE 2410 — a review of interim financial information performed by the independent auditor of the entity — and, for a listed company, Regulation 33 of SEBI LODR. The standard's procedures are inquiry and analytical procedures, not the substantive testing of an audit, and the workspace is shaped to that.

One workspace per quarter

Quarters are the unit: Q1 is April to June, Q2 July to September, Q3 October to December, Q4 January to March. Each quarter gets its own workspace holding the whole of that quarter's work.

The figures come from the vouchers, with two comparatives

The quarter's figures are read from the client's own vouchers, and presented against the previous quarter and the same quarter last year — the two comparisons an analytical review actually turns on. A movement that looks ordinary against last quarter often looks nothing like the same quarter a year ago, and that is the variance worth asking about.

Variances that have to be explained

The workspace carries the variances that must be explained rather than leaving the reviewer to notice them, and the standard inquiries of management that SRE 2410 expects, alongside the review programme.

A conclusion, in the standard's own four forms

The review ends in one of four conclusions — unmodified, qualified, adverse or disclaimer — and the report follows from it.

Prepared, reviewed, concluded — and it refuses self-review

The chain is explicit: prepared → reviewed → concluded, and it refuses self-review. The person who prepared the work cannot be the person who reviews it. Concluding is limited to a partner or an admin; review sits with a partner, manager or team lead.

That rule matters more in a quarterly cycle than an annual one. Quarterly work is where a small team is most tempted to let the preparer sign their own work because the deadline is in three days and there is nobody else free. The workspace does not allow it, which means the file that goes into the next peer review is defensible without anyone having to remember.

Questions CAs ask

Which standard does the limited review follow?

SRE 2410, the review of interim financial information performed by the independent auditor of the entity, and for a listed company Regulation 33 of SEBI LODR. The procedures are inquiry and analytical procedures rather than the substantive testing of an audit.

What does the quarter's figures get compared against?

The previous quarter and the same quarter last year — both comparatives, because a movement that looks ordinary against last quarter often does not against the same quarter a year earlier.

What conclusions can a review reach?

Unmodified, qualified, adverse or disclaimer, and the report follows from the conclusion recorded.

Can the person who prepared the review also sign it off?

No. The chain runs prepared, reviewed, concluded and refuses self-review. Review sits with a partner, manager or team lead, and concluding is limited to a partner or an admin.

How are the quarters defined?

Q1 is April to June, Q2 July to September, Q3 October to December and Q4 January to March, with one workspace per quarter holding that quarter's work.

  • Statutory Audit — Statutory audit software built around the Standards on Auditing — materiality, SA 530 sampling, SA 510 opening balances and confirmations, documented as the work is done.
  • Consolidated Review — Every module's findings in a single review worklist — what Audcrix marked and what the team marked, kept apart, each with its evidence and its severity.
  • Trial Balance — Read the trial balance with every ledger under its real group chain — opening, movement and closing, signed balances, and comparatives on one grouping.
